The Loganlea Community Association Inc. was established in response to the identified need of the Loganlea community to have a local meeting place and venue for community activities.
It commenced as a group meeting in a resident’s home before moving into the current building in Timms Street in 1993. The Department of Housing donated the land for the building and the Logan City Council contributed $100 000 towards the cost of construction of the building.
Logan TAFE assisted with the design of the building and Wacol prisoners undertook the bricklaying. The community centre is currently jointly owned by the Logan City Council and the Department of Housing.
The association became incorporated in 2002.
Involvement in the Commnunity
In 1998 the group became involved in a Community Renewal Program to encourage local involvement the development of the suburb’s Community Action Plan. Community Action Plans identify what the local community hopes to improve in the area and recommends projects to make it happen. These projects were then funded under the Department of Housing Community Renewal Program. The aims of these projects were to promote a safe, healthy and confident community. The group has been instrumental in prioritising and assisting in initiatives including Loganlea Police Beat, the Blue Dash Shuttle Bus and the upgrading of recreational facilities.
One of the issues identified in the Loganlea Community Action Plan was the need to maximise the use and effectiveness of the Loganlea Community Centre by the Loganlea community. After a successful tender for management of the community centre in November 2002, the group changed the incorporated name to Loganlea Community Association Inc. and assumed management of the centre in December of that year.
Since Incorporation
The LCAI Management Committee opened the doors of the centre on 20 January 2003 with a borrowed desk, filing cabinet and one telephone connection. There was no other furniture, curtains, stationery or other such luxuries. With the assistance of Logan City Council, a grant under the Community Renewal Program, other community organisations and most of all the dedication and commitment of local residents we have been able to provide quality ongoing services to the community ever since.
